General Motors decided that the Corvette had to appeal to a wider audience. Nearly 1,600 people were surveyed to see what the customer wanted.
The coupe was introduced at the Detroit Auto Show in January of 1997. The convertible debuted in 1998, and was followed by a removable hard-top.
